Communications + Content Specialist (2-3 days - contract/freelance)

Angus Knight and our Group of companies is a for profit, for purpose organisation that enriches the Australian community and economy through delivering economic, social and learning outcomes.

We are looking for an experienced comms and content specialist to join the marketing team initially in a contract or freelance capacity 2-3 days a week.

You will have exceptional writing and comms skills and a great understanding of translating comms and content into a wide variety of pieces and tones to suit multiple platforms and audience segments.

You will be responsible for creating, improving and maintaining content to achieve our business goals and working to deliver across various elements of the AKL marketing mix.

The ideal candidate is an experienced professional with demonstrable creative writing skills and will balance many projects at once. An ability to deal with stakeholders and key members of the team is vital.

You will have the ability to produce error-free content and have the skills and attention-to-detail to edit your own work. Ultimately, you should be able to oversee all marketing content initiatives to ensure customer engagement, brand consistency and a positive customer experience.


Angus Knight is a group of employment services companies who help people who are at disadvantage to get a job. Disadvantage may be experienced in the form of physical or mental disability, Australians who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, people who may have a criminal conviction.

Angus Knight partners with the Australian Government to deliver these services as a for profit, for purpose venture.

As a result of winning numerous Government tenders, the structure of the company is complex. There are 13 operating companies, some of which are joint ventures. The Angus Knight website (attempts) to explain this – and ironically will be one of the first projects this role needs to attend to.

  • Jobfind – finding jobs for people mainly in metropolitan Melbourne
  • RISE – operating in key remote indigenous communiites including Arhnem Land and Far North Queensland
  • Real Futures – operates within indigenous communities in  key regional areas including the UN womens Hub – which is the first UN appointed program operating in a first world country for first nation peoples
  • Learn Now – is the training division of AKG that offers the ability for people to upskill whilst looking for employment
  • This role will work across all brands



Key stakeholders to be influenced by the content strategy include (but not limited to):

  • Potential and current clients

  • Government key decision makers
  • AKG executive and frontline people
  • Journalists and other key opinion influencers

The success of the content delivery can be measured via:

  • Quality error free content delivery across all channels
  • Engagement of new and existing clients
  • Quantity of likes, comments, shares on social media channels
  • Social media sentiment scores
  • Google reviews
  • Newsletter subscriptions
  • Quantity & quality of PR impressions
  • Brand reputation (not solely attributable to this role)
  • Success with Government tender outcomes (not solely attributable to this role)


  • Develop content plan aligned with short-term and long-term marketing targets
  • Collaborate with marketing and design teams to plan and develop site content, style and layout
  • Create and publish engaging content
  • Ensure brand consistency across channels
  • Prepare online newsletters, good news stories, promotional emails and collateral, and organise their distribution through various channels
  • Use content management systems to analyse website traffic and user’s engagement metrics
  • Manage content distribution to online channels and social media platforms to increase web traffic
  • Identify media opportunities and liaise with journalists to secure press coverage
  • Track the news for relevant industry articles
  • Ensure compliance with law (e.g. copyright and data protection)
  • Stay up to date with developments and generate new ideas to draw audience’s attention


The skillset of the Communications Manager requires:

  • Proven work experience as a Writer/publicist
  • Excellent writing skills in English
  • Attention to detail
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • Firm knowledge of social media
  • An understanding of brevity (Communicate a value prop with minimal messaging)
  • Understanding of MS Office and WordPress
  • Knowledge of SEO and web traffic metrics an advantage



We believe that this newly created role can operate successfully on a flexible working basis. The successful candidate will be able to negotiate with the Head of Marketing as to the best combination of contact hours in the Sydney CBD office and working from home. Given the programmatic nature of the content rollout ie weekly/monthly/quarterly outputs, it will be important that the Communications Manager receives a clear brief and checks for understanding but is otherwise able to work remotely to produce the content elements.

The successful candidate will undertake a company induction and brand immersion process so that core information and key relationships can be established, and set up the role for success.
